Kansas City Star - Sound Choices

JUL/07/2008

Steely Dan bassist Walter Becker, whose solo CD “Circus Money” is out now, was asked by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution what his top five albums were of all time — in terms of production value, which was so important to Steely Dan.

“In jazz music, what (legendary engineer) Rudy Van Gelder did at Blue Note just really stands out,” Becker began. “The tones. The great balance of the instruments and just the sound he recorded — the emphasis on fundamentals and harmonies. So we’ve got to start with something like Herbie Hancock’s ‘Inventions & Dimensions.’ ”

He also likes Horace Silver’s “Song for My Father,” Cannonball Adderly’s “Somethin’ Else,” the Replacements’ “Hootenanny” and finally, everything by Bob Dylan up until “John Wesley Harding.”

“It was all just chaotic,” he said. “And someone was really smart just to let that happen; not to do something about it. You know, like I heard he would only cut it two or three times and be done with it. Not like Elton John — who makes great-sounding records — but would lay down like 1,000 vocals.”

Circus Money By Walter Becker

In 1994, Walter Becker’s solo debut 11 Tracks of Whack established that he had more to say – and more ways to say it – than could be contained in the epochal oeuvre of Steely Dan.

Circus Money marks Becker's long-awaited return to stand-alone status. Aiding and abetting Becker is Grammy-winning producer and co-writer Larry Klein (Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters), plus Steely Dan musicians; drummer Keith Carlock, guitarist Jon Herington, saxophonist Chris Potter, and keyboardists Ted Baker and Jim Beard.

For all its talented complement, listening to Circus Money produces an unquestionably Beckeresque experience. Singular, sublime, and just a little warped; there can be no imagining this music as coming from anyone else.
